Overview
The Poinciana Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) provides structured residential rehabilitation services for adults living with mental health conditions who require a supportive therapeutic environment to promote recovery, independence, and community reintegration.
Admission to PRC follows a structured intake process designed to ensure that individuals referred to the facility are suitable for the rehabilitation services offered and can safely participate in the therapeutic community.
All referrals are carefully reviewed by the clinical team to determine eligibility and readiness for admission.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for admission to PRC, individuals should meet the following criteria:
- Be between 18 and 65 years of age. In certain circumstances, individuals over 65 may be considered if they meet the admission criteria.
- Consent to treatment and demonstrate willingness to participate in rehabilitation services.
- Have a documented history of a mental health condition and some level of insight into their mental health needs.
- Be able to participate in multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs and carry out activities of daily living with minimal supervision.
- Be willing to continue recommended psychiatric and medical treatment throughout the rehabilitation process.
- Be willing to live within a gender-neutral, multicultural community setting for the duration of their stay.
- Participate actively in clinical and rehabilitative programs, which may include:
- Clinical reviews
- Psychotherapy
- Occupational therapy
- Vocational and life-skills training
- Recreational and wellness programs
- Educational activities
- Understand and agree to comply with PRC policies, procedures, and community guidelines.
- Agree to comply with PRC’s drug and alcohol policy, including mandatory drug screening upon admission and random screening during residency.
Admission Exclusions
PRC may not be able to provide appropriate services in the following circumstances:
- Individuals under the age of 18.
- Individuals experiencing an acute phase of mental illness requiring intensive inpatient care.
- Individuals exhibiting persistent aggressive or threatening behaviour.
- Individuals with a repetitive history of fire-setting behaviour.
- Individuals with severe organic brain syndromes, neurocognitive disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, or complex medical conditions requiring specialized care outside the scope of PRC services.
- Individuals who pose a significant risk of harm to themselves or others, including risk of sexual harm.
These criteria are intended as a general guide. Each referral is assessed individually by the clinical team.
Important Admission Notes
- PRC does not accept emergency admissions.
- Admissions may include both voluntary residents and individuals admitted under the Mental Health Act.
- Persons under an Assisted Outpatient Treatment Order (AOTO) may be considered if they:
- Consent to treatment at PRC
- Demonstrate willingness to continue psychiatric care
- Meet the eligibility criteria.
- PRC is not designated as a place of safety under mental health legislation.
